SACRED FIGS
In her brief but powerful poem Neetu Malik shares a universal story about the juxtaposition of biological and spiritual hunger.
Sacred Figs
The Buddha reclines
gracefully
a smile illuminates
his gentle face
nearby naked urchins
dig for scraps
in garbage cans
they do not yet know
they should look
under
the Peepal Tree
the Buddha knows
but doesn’t tell.
